MB GPW Review of WWII 6 volt Autolite generators

This article shows the different 6 volt WWII Autolite generators that were used. This article also shows what to look for when your searching for one.


This article applies to both Willys MB and Ford GPW WWII Military Jeeps 

1. Looking for the correct 6v generator for your jeep may take some patience, but if you know what your are looking for.... can be very rewarding in the long run. This article will go into some depth on the different versions of autolite 6v generators and what to look for when you are searching for one.

2. First of all, there are three different 6v autolite generators that were used on the WWII jeep for both Willys and Fords. Lets first note the models
GEG-5001A - early Oiler front and back
GEG-5002D - mid sealed bearing front and back
GEG-5101D - Late sealed bearing front and Oiler back

3. For MB's the following has been documented
GEG-5001A up to engine MB 158007 (Jan 1942)
GEG-5002D after engine MB 158007 till XXXXX (Feb 1943)
GEG-5101D till end of production (VERIFY THIS STATEMENT)

4. Reading the data tag is most important.
1) Generator type : GEG-5001A, GEG-5002D, GEG-5101D
2) Serial number first two characters
-MONTH 1 thru 12
YEAR:
1941 - U
1942-W
1943-X
1944-Y
1945-Z
1946-A

example: 6Z12321 = June 1945 serial number:12321
Amps 40 (only)
